Hookoween

Hookoween was a fun event held by the Guild on Saturday, October 13th. Everyone was encouraged to wear hats and alot of people did, so that made for a festive atmosphere.

A vote was taken and a prize give for the best hat.

The event was held at a historic train station and we were told about some of the resident ghosts that have been encounted there through the years - the room we were in was decorated with vintage inspired paper goods hanging from the lights and displayed on tables.

The potluck lunch was delicious and everyone came away with full tummies - - -

- - - eyeballs and skeletons in the punch bowl!

Each person attending received one of these wonderful hand scuplted candy boxes filled with Halloween treats - they were made by Londi and Pat and were just delightful!

And lots of people having fun visiting and working with wool.

The rugs on display were delightful to see.

 

The Hookoween was a fun, fun event and the attendees would like to thank the Board for all their efforts to make it memorable for us!

Utah Hook-In 2012

Everyone who attended the Hook-In over the weekend enjoyed seeing all the beautiful rugs and the chance to visit with fellow rug hookers. An exciting announcement was made that Maggie Bonanomi has been contracted to teach a workshop for the guild next year so that is great news and something to look forward to.

The outgoing board was recognized and thanked for leading the guild during the past two years:

Sharon gave a demonstration on how to crochet an edge around a rug - to be used as an alternative to whipping with yarn or using a twill tape finish.

It was very helpful that she provided a hands on opportunity for trying it ourselves because that makes it much easier to remember how to do it when we get back home!

Here are the three rugs that got the most votes and received the People's Choice awards.

First place was Arline's portrait of her grandparents.

Second place was Nancy's colorful, playful rug - she was inspired by the design on a shopping bag.

Third place was Jeanette's Americana rug designed by Polly Minnick.

These are the ribbons that were presented to the winners (the red ribbon was gone by the time this picture was taken - sorry!)

Londi gave a great power point presentation to the group on copyrights, public domain, trademarks, and licensing. Plus she demonstration what a useful tool it is to use Pinterest to retain photos of rugs and other items that catch our attention as we surf the web.

And finally, this is a sampling of the projects that were being worked on during the course of the day. I'm pretty sure that there was more visiting accomplished than there was hooking! LOL

Join the Utah Rug and Fiber Guild (URFG)

     URFG was founded in 2009 to stimulate and foster appreciation and education about rug hooking and other fiber arts within the State of Utah.  

     URFG members come from many regions throughout the State, and are a congenial mix of beginners, amateurs, professionals and fiber arts business representatives.  Membership is $25.00 per year, and the year runs January 1st to December 31st.  Membership entitles you to participate in events and meetings and also provides opportunities for you to enroll in seminars from nationally renown teachers each year (see "Events & Meetings" blog page for more details).
